Get the test version
Cranklet is in testing now. It is not in the App Store for everyone yet.
- Install Apple's TestFlight app from the App Store. On the Mac, TestFlight is in the Mac App Store.
- Open the invitation email or link on the device, and tap View in TestFlight.
- Tap Accept, then Install.
Cranklet needs iOS 17 or later, or macOS 14 or later.
What you need
- A smart trainer with Bluetooth. Any trainer that speaks the standard FTMS protocol. The Wahoo KICKR SNAP and other older Wahoo trainers work through Wahoo's own protocol. Cranklet is built and tested on a KICKR SNAP.
- Optional: a Bluetooth heart rate strap and a cadence sensor.
- Close the Wahoo app, Zwift, and any other training app first. A trainer holds one Bluetooth connection at a time.
Your first ride
- Pair the trainer. Open More (on the Mac, Settings), then Devices. Tap Scan for devices, then tap your trainer. Pair a heart rate strap and a cadence sensor the same way. The app remembers them and reconnects by itself next time.
- Set your FTP. Under Rider, enter your FTP, the power you can hold for about an hour. Workout targets are a percent of it. Not sure of yours? Take the ramp test in Workouts. Add your weight too: on a route, it sets how fast you go up and down hills.
- Ride. On Home, tap Free Ride to spin with the trainer in ERG, Level, Grade, or Off. Tap Workouts and pick one to follow a plan. Tap Ride a route to ride a hill.
- Stop. Tap the … button in the player, then Stop ride. The ride is saved as a FIT file. The summary shows your numbers, with Share FIT file to send it anywhere.
Things to try
- Intensity: the minus and plus buttons in the player lower or raise the whole workout by 5 percent. Skip a step or mark a lap from the … menu.
- Minimize the player: tap the arrow at the top left. A bar keeps the time and your watts on every screen. Tap the bar to go back.
- Import a workout: open a ZWO file from Files, Mail, or Messages, or tap the import button in Workouts. Tap plus to build your own.
- Import a route: open a GPX, TCX, or FIT file the same way, or tap the import button in Routes. Under More, Trainer difficulty sets the share of each grade the trainer gets.
- Virtual gears: for a trainer with one cog, such as a Zwift Cog, turn on gears under More. Shift buttons show on routes and in Grade mode.
- Apple Health: on iPhone and iPad, turn on Save rides to Apple Health under More. Each finished ride becomes an indoor cycling workout.
- Storage: under More, keep rides, workouts, and routes on this device, in iCloud Drive, or in a folder you choose. Changing it takes your files along.
- Calibrate: after ten minutes of riding, tap Calibrate trainer (spindown) under Devices, and follow the steps.
- On the Mac: Space pauses. The up and down arrows with Command change intensity. Command and the right arrow skips a step. Command L marks a lap. The Ride menu lists them all.
If the trainer does not show up
- Check that Bluetooth is on, and that the trainer is powered and awake. Spin the pedals once.
- Close every other app that talks to the trainer, including the maker's own app.
- On the Mac, make sure Cranklet has Bluetooth permission in System Settings, Privacy & Security, Bluetooth.
- Turn on Scan all devices under Devices to list everything nearby. If the trainer is there but will not connect, write to us with its name.
Report a problem
Say what you tapped, what you expected, and what happened. A screenshot helps. Say which trainer you have.
- Take a screenshot in the app, then tap Share Beta Feedback. After a crash, TestFlight asks if you want to send a report.
- For a trainer problem, say what the Devices list showed, and what the trainer did.
